Positive evaluation of GEUS’ research into energy resources and geological storage

Published 16-02-2026

An international evaluation panel has assessed GEUS’ research in the field of energy and storage as both positive and promising. The panel particularly highlights the quality of the research, the high proportion of peer-reviewed publications, the ability to attract research funding and an open and collaborative research environment.

The evaluation covers the period 2017–2024 and includes GEUS’ research in areas such as CO₂ storage (CCS), geothermal energy, seismic monitoring, offshore wind farms and the decommissioning of oil and gas fields. The evaluation has been carried out in accordance with the current executive order on the evaluation of research at GEUS.

International recognition in a period of transition

The overall evaluation paints a positive picture of the research and research environment at GEUS. Among other things, the panel points out that, during a period marked by green transition and COVID-19, GEUS has undergone a significant professional and organisational transition from hydrocarbon-related consultancy work to research into sustainable geoenergy and geological storage. According to the panel, management and employees have shown great resilience, built strong research partnerships and increased the number of peer-reviewed publications.

At the same time, the panel emphasises GEUS’ interdisciplinary strengths, close collaboration with Danish universities and access to extensive data and advanced laboratory facilities that support international research collaboration.

Areas for development and next steps

The evaluation also identifies areas for development, including the need for further prioritisation of research efforts and strengthening of the long-term strategic direction. On this basis, GEUS has drawn up an action plan to ensure continued professional development and high international relevance.

High satisfaction

The final evaluation report from the panel has been submitted to the GEUS Board of Directors, and the Chair of the Board, Katrine Krogh Andersen, welcomes the panel’s conclusions:

“The board is very satisfied with the positive evaluation of GEUS’ research in the field of energy resources and geological storage, which is considered to be internationally recognised and of the highest standard. It is crucial for the green transition that Denmark has a strong research institution in the field of energy and storage – and the evaluation confirms that GEUS delivers just that.”

Facts

The research evaluation of Energy Resources and Geological Storage took place in April 2025 and was carried out by an international panel consisting of researchers from the University of Aberdeen, Université Grenoble Alpes, Geological Survey of the Netherlands and Heriot-Watt University. The panel visited GEUS, participated in technical presentations, inspected laboratories and interviewed employees. The final report was delivered in June 2025.
