New release: 2D seismic data from areas around Gassum and Thorning structures

Published 22-10-2024

GEUS is digitising analogue seismic data from the Danish subsurface and making it freely available. The latest addition to the data collection is now ready for use, benefitting, among other things, the green transition.

2D seismic from a new ‘reprocessed’ dataset called GEUS-M-JUTLAND-RE2024 containing selected vintage seismic 2D lines acquired around the Gassum and Thorning structures, is now freely available via GEUS's subsurface database (GEUS’ Undergrundsportal).

Making older data future-proof

During 2023 and 2024, the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) collected and released new 2D data covering the Gassum and Thorning structures in central part of Jutland (GEUS2023-GASSUM and GEUS2023-THORNING).

A large part of the surrounding older 2D lines only exists as analogue data in paper form, which have been scanned and made available as image files. To make this data more usable, as well as to improve the possibility of connecting the above new processings with data from surrounding wells, GEUS has vectorized, navigation-merged, enhanced and SEGY-converted a curated selection of those image files.

This means that the 2D lines are now available as digital data, allowing direct use in modern interpretation applications.

Free data

GEUS is the national data repository for deep seismic data and has been receiving and archiving data from seismic surveys since 1948. In addition to the already available 3D data, released borehole data, and GEUS' more recent data collections, GEUS has, over the past few years, been working on releasing and making older 2D datasets from the archives accessible.

Through GEUS's subsurface database (GEUS’ Undergrundsportal), there is free access to download processed data from deeper 2D surveys, covering virtually all archived land-based surveys, nearshore surveys in the North Sea, and inner Danish waters, except for Bornholm.
